Religion in Congleton
This walk through the religious history of the town will use
buildings to show how Astbury
Church imposed itself
upon Congleton and how the town’s Victorian expansion led to diversity in
religious buildings, practice and belief.

In the Footsteps of David Livingstone
On 29th
January 1858 David Livingstone visited Congleton. He was presented with an address by the town
council and
delivered a lecture in the Assembly Rooms.
This walk will feature places associated with
his visit and explain his
connection with the town.

A Pub Crawl through Time
Congleton was renowned in the past for the high number of inns, taverns, and drinking houses for the size of its population. This walk will seek out those long lost drinking establishments and look at how those which still exist have changed over the years.

Changing Places
This walk will use images of Congleton taken
over the past 100 years to show how the main streets have
developed to meet the
changing social and economic needs of the town and its inhabitants.

Mill Walks and Industrial Yarns
The layout of Congleton has changed considerably
since the first silk mill was built in 1752.
This walk will try to show, through its mills, how Congleton’s textile
heritage affected the town.

and international affairs. This walk will look at the various places
linked with people like John Bradshaw,

we will look at some of the techniques which can be used when
visiting an unfamiliar place to find out
about its history.
