Water has been important in the development of Congleton as both a means of transport and an industrial resource for the tanning and textile trades. The provision of drinking water and an effective sewage disposal system was still concerning the town as late as the 1960s.

As the Industrial Revolution forced many skilled workers into poverty, the Rochdale Pioneers, the fathers of the Co-op Movement, opened their own store selling food they could not otherwise afford. This spread to other industrial towns including Congleton. This walk will chart this growth and visit the shops/premises much loved in people's memories.
