The Staffordshire Hoard – a talk by Stephen Dean

Join Stephen Dean for a talk about The Staffordshire Hoard. One of the first people to see the Staffordshire Hoard is coming to tell people in Congleton all about it. Stephen Dean, Staffordshire’s top archaeologist, is an inspiring speaker and says, “I can talk for hours on this subject.” He’ll be at Congleton Library on Thursday 6th June at 7.30pm. Originally planned to be held at the museum, the take up is already  so good, it has been transferred to the downstairs room at the library.…

The Importance of Water

Water has been important in the development of Congleton as both a means of transport and an industrial resource for the tanning and textile trades. The provision of drinking water and an effective sewage disposal system was still concerning the town as late as the 1960s.

The History of Religion in Congleton

He will conduct a pictorial tour of churches in Congleton, explaining their individual histories and the influences (both local and national) that affected their development.

Halloween Ghost Walk

Starting from the museum and ending up for ghoulish games at Visyon in Fellowship House:  17:00 a walk for accompanied children 17:30 and 18:30 walks for older children and adults  Tickets (from the museum or tourist office) £1 - under 5s £2 - older children and adults £6 - Group ticket (up to 5 –max 2 adults) For the 17:00 walk accompanying adults will only pay £1  Fancy dress optional. Prizes for the best home made outfits.

World War I comes to Congleton Museum

A travelling kiosk of images showing the impact Word War 1 had on communities across Cheshire is being hosted by Congleton Museum until 22 February 2014.  Congleton images include Somerford Hall being used as a military hospital and the ladies' war working party, in the town hall, making comforts for the troops.  These, in association with similar images, including the recruitment of soldiers by the Cheshire Regiment at Chester Castle, recuperating soldiers at the Barbour Institute at Tattenhall and the way in…
