Congleton in the First World War

Description

How Congleton responded to the challenges of the First World War, from the initial euphoria of 1914, through the creation of Red Cross Hospitals to care for the wounded, the fear of Zeppelin raids and the institution of lighting restrictions, the creation of the War Working Party and the arrival of Belgian refugees. The author also looks at how the town commemorated those who served, through the erection of a cenotaph and the building of a new ‘War Memorial’ hospital.
