History of the silk industry in Congleton

Description

The development of mechanical silk spinning or throwing through the use of water power provided the impetus for Congleton’s industrial revolution, making the town one of the early adopters of a factory system. This booklet describes the production of silk thread from cocoon to bobbin and weaving on both narrow and broad looms, as well as dying and printing. There is also an overview of how the industry grew and the impact it had upon the town’s prosperity.
