Collections Management Volunteer Opportunities

Be Part of Something Big – Help Bring Congleton’s Collection Online!

Exciting things are happening at Congleton Museum, and we’re calling on local residents to get involved.

With support from AIM Museum Fundamentals, funded by the Pilgrim Trust and The Julia Rausing Trust, the museum is about to begin a digital transformation that will make thousands of objects from our collection accessible online for the very first time.

The project, titled “From Archive to Access: Securing & Sharing Congleton’s Heritage”, will introduce a modern collections management system and bring our website to life with searchable records, photographs, and new digital exhibitions.

To make it happen, we’re inviting people to join us as Collections Management Volunteers – and there are several ways you can take part.

You might choose to:

  • 📁 Work behind the scenes with the collection database, helping to prepare object records for upload
  • 📷 Get hands-on by photographing items from the collection for publication
  • 🔁 Or combine both roles, if you’re curious to try something new!

Whether you’re already confident with digital tools or cameras — or completely new to both — we’ll provide full training. No prior experience is needed, just interest and commitment.

This is your chance to:

  • Discover rarely seen objects from Congleton’s past
  • Learn new skills in digital heritage and collections work
  • Be part of a welcoming team contributing to something meaningful
  • Help bring local history to the wider world

As a volunteer, you’ll also receive:
🎟️ Free museum membership
🎓 Training and support throughout the project
🏛️ Participation in a reciprocal museum visiting scheme
🎉 Invitations to volunteer-only social events

We believe this project will not only transform how the museum works, but also give volunteers a meaningful role in shaping how our local heritage is preserved and shared.

So whether you want to contribute one morning a week or a few hours a month, we’d love to hear from you.

Be part of this exciting change — and help us make history more accessible than ever.
