Sunday Walk – Discover Your Congleton

New to Congleton? Or would you just like to know more about your town? This walk is for you. Explore the origins of the town, the medieval development of its street plan and explore those places which help explain the town’s significance in national history.

During the walk you will explore those hidden corners and quirky buildings, each with a fascinating story to tell. This will be your opportunity to find out where Rope Walk, Priesty Fields, and the Cockshuts are, and how they got their names. You will also be able to find out why ‘Dog Lane’ changed its name, where is the bridge in ‘Bridge Street and was there any coal on Cole Hill Bank. Hidden gems such as Black Lion Court and the Bath House will be revealed as will Congleton’s crucial role in the, the English Civil War, the defeat of Napoleon, and the fight for female emancipation. Discover why Congleton became one of the pioneer mill towns of the industrial revolution. The walk will conclude with one of our complimentary cream teas.
Meet at Congleton Museum at 2pm. Pay by either cash or card upon arrival, no need to book in advance. Each attendee will receive a physical booklet which will be referred to during the walk.
Following the walk, a cream tea will be provided back at the museum, upstairs in the Sue Dorman Room. Scones and jams are sourced locally. Please let us know at least 48 hours in advance if you have any dietary requirements or allergies.
Adults £10, Friends of Congleton Museum £7, Children FREE.
Please let us know any access enquiries in advance, as walks can be slightly tailored. Dogs are permitted on the walk around the town, but not inside the museum at any time. Guide dogs are welcomed.
