Congleton possesses an extensive collection of municipal charters. In this booklet, the first of two, the author outlines both the national and local contexts within which the granting of the first charter, in 1272, took place. There is a transcription of the the text, a detailed analysis of the content and an assessment of what it meant for the fledgling community of Congleton. Reference is also made to subsequent charters from the reigns of Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, James I, Charles II and George VI.
